Greek Mainland to Crete Submarine Cable Project Starts Installation


Comprehensive foreign media news, connecting the Greek city of Attica (Attica) and Crete Heraklion (Heraklion) submarine communication cable system has started the installation project.

According to reports, the system is part of the Attica-Crete high-voltage DC interconnection system, with a total investment of up to 1 billion euros, which is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2024.

Italian cable manufacturer Prussian was awarded the supply contract for the project in 2020 for a total of 270 million euros. This includes the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of a €250 million high-voltage DC cable system. As well as a contract worth €20 million for the laying of submarine communication cables for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the system. The total length is 670 kilometers.

According to the report, the system is designed to transmit 1,000 MW of power. Prysmian will use its own vessels to install the submarine cables. The delivery and commissioning of both projects are scheduled for the period 2020-2023.

The Crete-Attica interconnection is said to be the largest energy infrastructure project underway in Greece. It represents a milestone for the national grid at a depth of more than 1,200 m.
